A Warm Welcome to the Shiloh Family

Dear Shiloh Community,

I would like to express my sincere thanks to you for welcoming my family with such warmth and kindness. My first weeks here have been filled with real joy as we have settled into the Zambian way of life. The landscape, the pace, the people, it is all something truly special.

I confess we are still getting used to a few things! The Mpashi ants have already made their presence known and have terrorised the children on more than one occasion. We have also had to adjust to the reality that anything forgotten at home means a 60 km round trip, a lesson learned the hard way when nappies were left behind. These small adventures are already becoming the stories we will tell for years to come.

What I have seen in the short time I have been here is a school with enormous potential. The students here have a wonderful platform from which to build their futures and to excel in higher education. I believe deeply in developing what I call the 4-in-1 student — one who approaches academics, sports, service and culture with the same mindset and commitment. This holistic approach truly develops a young person into a complete human being, ready for the world beyond these walls.

Every school is built on pillars, and each school's pillars will be unique to its character. For me, and for Shiloh, those pillars are represented by the following values:

Our Foundational Values

🤝 Respect
⚖️ Integrity
🌿 Service
❤️ Empathy
🎯 Responsibility
🌱 Resilience

These are not just words on a page. They are the commitments we make to one another every day, as teachers, as parents, and as students. I look forward to building this culture together with you.

The Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt, What This Means for Parents

In The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt makes a compelling case that many children around the world are growing up in a "phone-based" world rather than a "play-based" one, something he links directly to rising levels of anxiety, loneliness, and poor mental health in young people.

His solution? More outdoor play, real-world independence, age-appropriate risk, and genuine connection with the people and environment around them. Less screen time, less social media, and more of the kind of childhood that allows children to discover who they are through experience rather than a device.

At Shiloh, our children are already living what researchers are only now beginning to advocate for. The farms, the bush, the open skies, and the tight-knit community that surrounds this school are not inconveniences, they are extraordinary gifts. Our children explore, take risks, get their hands dirty, and build real friendships. Haidt's research simply affirms what many of you already know instinctively.

A reminder for Shiloh families: The childhood your children are experiencing here is something rare and deeply valuable. It builds confidence, resilience, and emotional strength, preparing them not just for academic success, but for a full and meaningful life. That is something to be genuinely proud of.
Pasta pineapple art project

What's Happening in the ELC

Our youngest learners have been busy recapping songs and numbers this week, and are getting very excited for the Mini Beast theme coming up next week!

Meanwhile, Ms Nortje's class have been exploring the letter P in the most creative way, making perfect pasta pineapples! The children used yellow pasta wheels and green tissue paper to bring these smiling pineapple characters to life. A wonderful blend of literacy, fine motor skills, and creativity.

Well done to all our little artists!

Congratulations, Mr K!

Mr K and Dalitso wedding

We are delighted to share the wonderful news that Mr K got married during the April holidays on the 25th of April. He and his wife, Dalitso, whose name beautifully means Blessing, are now settled together here in Mkushi.

On behalf of the entire Shiloh community, we wish Mr K and Dalitso a lifetime of love, joy, and happiness together. What a wonderful way to begin their married life here in the heart of Zambia.

A Verse for Our Community

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."
